Obituary

Mary “Faye” Dozier Gay

Matthews, GA –          Mary “Faye” Dozier Gay, 83, loving wife of the late Roy Lee Gay, entered into her eternal rest Friday morning, April 10, 2020 at Doctors Hospital. Because of the current ordinances regarding COVID-19 and the family’s respect and concern for public health and safety, the family will hold private graveside services at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at Wrens Memorial Cemetery with the Reverends Mason Davis and Carson Fellows officiating.

No public services will be held; therefore, at this time of sorrow in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the family asks that you acknowledge her passing with your thoughts and prayers for the family.

Faye was one of three children born to the late Sara Broxton Dozier and the late Robert Harris Dozier in the St. Claire community in Burke County. She attended school in Hephzibah, was on the girls’ basketball team and graduated as valedictorian of the 1954 class at Hephzibah High School.  She met Roy, the love of her life, while attending Camp Meeting at Mt. Moriah.  Soon after graduating high school, they married and started their family, being blessed with the births of two sons. Faye obtained her Cosmetology degree from Augusta Tech and opened her own salon next to their home on Center Street in Wrens. In 1965, the family moved to the Gay home place in Matthews. Faye’s favorite job was being a homemaker—her goal was to make their home a comfortable safe haven. Loving her family unconditionally, they brought her much joy and pleasure, especially the time spent with her “grands” and “greats”.  She loved her flowers, working in her yard and cooking for her family.  She had a loving, nurturing nature and was an organized, strong-willed, independent, no-nonsense person with a very forthright approach with people—you always knew exactly where you stood with her. Her passion was genealogy and church history. Faye loved the Lord with all her heart, mind and soul, serving Him faithfully at Wrens Baptist Church.  In her years of service, she was involved in WMU, went on several mission trips, taught several Sunday School classes, attended many Bible studies, and served on several different committees.  Her priority was to make sure her family knew about Jesus, about His love for them and the world, and about His sacrifice to pay their sin debt. Faye read and studied her Bible, which is well-worn and marked.  Her favorite passage, which she inscribed in the front of her Bible, was Proverbs 3:5-6—"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”  Her faith and trust in the Lord brought her through life’s hardest trials; and now, having a new, perfect body, she is in Glory with God, rejoicing with her loved ones forever more.

Faye was also preceded in death by her brother, Bill Dozier.  Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons, Jim Gay (Connie) and Jeff Gay (Jeanne); sister, Helen Sparks (Donald); four grandchildren, Jeremy Gay (Natalie), Jessica Howard (Adam), Jacob Gay (Lauren) and Jonathan Gay (Rachel); six great grandchildren, Carter Gay, William Gay, Ava Grace Gay, Sarah Faye Howard, Harrison Howard, Jake Austin Gay and Baby Boy Gay; nieces, nephews, church family and friends.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the kindnesses evidenced in thought, deed and prayer.  In lieu of food and/or flowers, memorial contributions are requested to be made to Wrens Baptist Church, PO Box 217, Wrens, GA 38033 earmarked for Greater Things/Building Fund.
