John Weldon Purvis Jr.
Wrens, GA – John Weldon Purvis Jr., 93, loving husband of 70 years to Sue Rooks Purvis, entered into his eternal rest early Thursday morning, November 19, 2020 at his residence. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday afternoon November 21, 2020 in the Wrens Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Faye Burgamy officiating.
Because of the family’s respect and concern for public health and safety during this COVID-19 pandemic, the family requests that social distancing and other safety precautions be followed. The wearing of face masks is strongly encouraged.
The only child of the late Lollie Wren Purvis and the late John Weldon Purvis Sr., Weldon was born and raised in the Panhandle. Being a patriot, he joined the Army during World War II after graduating from Wrens High School. Because he was an only son, his time in the Army was curtailed so that he could join his father in working the family farm. His father opened a country store and made Weldon the full-time manager. Because they raised and processed all the meat sold in the store, Weldon became proficient in making sausage and butchery, and became known as “The Meat Man”. After closing the country store, Weldon devoted all of his time to farming. A hard worker, he rarely took “leisure” time—his relaxation was working the land. Weldon loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus, serving him faithfully for 80 +/- years at Zoar United Methodist Church. He was faithful, loyal and reliable to his family, church and friends—his word was his bond. Weldon was congenial and pleasant, but was a man of few words. Lovingly known as “Grumpy” by his grandchildren, he loved his family unconditionally with a steadfast devotion. Having accepted Jesus’ free gift of salvation and living an honest life of moral integrity, Weldon is glorifying his Lord in his eternal home in Heaven. With sad hearts, we celebrate his homegoing.
Those left to cherish his memories also include his son, Andrew R. Purvis (Diane); two grandchildren, Darrin Fox (Sebrina) and Sean Fox; three great grandchildren, Shelby Wagner (Jake), Drew Fox and Trevor Fox; one great-great granddaughter, Nora Wagner; church family and many friends.
The family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Zoar United Methodist Church, c/o Frankie Kitchens, 3033 Quail Farm Rd SW, Thomson GA 30824.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the kindnesses evidenced in thought, deed and prayer.
