Joey Howard Owens

Wrens, GA  –              Joey Howard Owens, 63, loving husband to the late Janice Elizabeth Dukes Owens, entered into his eternal rest Sunday morning, July 19, 2020 at University Hospital in Augusta. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00A.M. Wednesday morning, July 22, 2020, with Rev. Joe Walden officiating. Interment will follow at Ways Baptist Church Cemetery.

Because of the family’s concern for public health and safety during this COVID-19 pandemic, the family requests that social distancing and other safety precautions be followed as mandated. The wearing of face masks is encouraged.

The youngest of seven children born to the late Ola Mae Moon Owens and the late Vernon James “V.J.” Owens, Joey grew up in Wrens, graduating from Wrens High School in 1975. He married the love of his life in 1979 and started their family. Joey worked with his brother in the paint and body work business for years, then ventured into the heating and air business, before working 20 years with Jefferson Electric as a warehouse manager, and then retiring from Kimberly Clark a couple of months ago when his health declined.   Joey loved his Lord and Savior, accepting Him as a young man at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church. After he married, his family attended Ways Baptist Church and then Wrens Church of God. In later years, he attended the churches at which his son, Jason, pastored. Joey loved working on and restoring old cars, and just tinkering on anything—he could make anything work again. His passion was riding motorcycles, especially in the mountains, which uplifted him and gave him much solace and freedom.  Having an easy-going, laid-back personality, he could be stern and stand firm when necessary. Joey had an absolute, unconditional love for his family and was especially close to his grandchildren. This quiet, unassuming man housed a big heart and generous, loving spirit that will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.  Joey is now reunited with his precious wife where they will forever glorify God.

Joey is also preceded in death by his sister, Vera Templeton. Those left to cherish his memories include his two sons, Kevin J. Owens (Crystal) and Jason W. Owens (Ashley); six grandchildren, Aiden Woodard, MaKenzie Owens, Hunter Owens, Addisyn Owens, Woodson Owens and Lily Owens; five siblings, Mary Ann Johnson (Jimmy), Tommy Owens (Revonda), Joyce Williams (Jack), Darlene Williford and Jerry Owens; a multitude of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Anthony Dukes, Caleb Dukes, Nick Dukes, Paul Dukes, Marty Owens, and Chevy Phillips.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday evening, July 21, 2020.

Because of the sudden nature of Joey’s passing, the family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made directly to James Funeral Home, P.O. Box 588, Wrens GA 30833.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the kindnesses evidenced in thought, deed and prayer.
