James “Melvin” Evans, Jr.

Matthews, GA  –         James “Melvin” Evans, Jr., 82, loving husband of 61 years to Marian Claudette Kitchens Evans, entered into his eternal rest Thursday night, April 18, 219, at his residence. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 P.M. Saturday afternoon, April 27, 2019, with Reverend Tony Key officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodland Baptist Church Cemetery.

One of four children born to the late Evelyn Duke Evans and the late James Melvin Evans Sr., Melvin grew up in the Matthews area.  After graduating high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1955-1958.  He moved his family to Atlanta for his job opportunity with AirCond Atlanta where he worked as a steam fitter, retiring after 37 years of service. A couple of years after retirement, he moved back home to Matthews.  He loved his Lord and Savior, serving Him as a member of Woodland Baptist Church. Melvin enjoyed fishing, skiing, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Behind his quiet, unassuming disposition was a mischievous sense of humor.  He loved his family unconditionally and was most content in their presence.

Melvin was also preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Lewis Evans. Other survivors include his children, Michael M. Evans (Rhonda) of Edmonton Alberta Canada, Christopher M. Evans (Mei Ling) of Dubai, UAE, Dawn E. McGrew (Ron) of Port Orange FL, and Susan M. Evans of Atlanta; three grandsons, Matthew K. McGrew (Lara) of Bellville TX, Christopher M. Evans of New York NY, and Jonathan J. Evans of Seattle WA; two siblings, Anne Evans Arrington of Wrens, and William Bob Evans (Tina) of Newport News VA; sister-in-law, Jerry Lamb Evans of Wrens; and many loved cousins, nieces, nephews, church family and friends.  Pallbearers will be James Arrington, Paul Arrington, Chris Evans, Mike Evans, Matt McGrew and Ron McGrew.  Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons and the Mens' Sunday School Class of Woodland Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. prior to the services Saturday afternoon, April 27, 2019.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to Woodland Baptist church, 22259 Hwy 1 N, Matthews GA 30818.
