Grady Stewart, Jr.

Blythe, GA  –              Grady Stewart, Jr., 81, loving husband of 53 years to Carolyn Johnston Stewart, entered into his eternal rest Saturday morning, April 18, 2020 at the Doctors Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 2:00P.M. Wednesday afternoon, April 22, 2020 in the Mt. Moriah Church Cemetery.

Because of the current ordinances regarding COVID-19 and the family’s respect and concern for public health and safety, the family has chosen to hold a celebration of life service at a later date.  They ask that you acknowledge his passing with your thoughts and prayers for the family.

Born to the late Nancy Laura Sellers Stewart and the late Grady Stewart Sr., Grady grew up in the St. Claire community and attended Waynesboro High School. He quit school to help his family by working on the Dye farm, after which he drove a mower/scraper for GA Department of Transportation. Grady then started driving a dump truck for the chalk mine in Hephzibah. During this time, he attended training classes to learn to work on diesel engines which started his career as a mechanic. After leaving the chalk mine, he worked as a mechanic for Swann Oil, Ryder, and then GA Pacific, retiring after 16 years of service at the age of 62. Grady had a tireless work ethic and had a “get it done now” attitude. Even after work, he would work on friends’ and family’s vehicles in his yard. His hobby was tinkering and “mechanic-ing”.  He loved to work on lawn mowers, old tractors, golf carts—anything mechanical. Being creative and skilled as a welder and fabricator, Grady also built from scratch two tractors and two cars.  When not working or “tinkering”, he did enjoy deep sea fishing. Grady has been described as being persistent, independent, gentle, kind, and would help everyone, even strangers who he considered as friends he had not yet met.  He loved talking politics and kept up with the local and national news. A believer in Jesus Christ, he tried to live an exemplary life. Above all else, Grady loved his family unconditionally and with his whole being. Even though he is no longer here on earth, he is in the hearts of those who remain.

Grady is also preceded in death by his siblings, Alton Stewart, Lois Hyland, Ruth Andrews, Louise Wall, Carrie Amerson, Lisa Mae Prickett, Elizabeth Huff and Voncille Prickett. Others left to cherish fond memories include his children, Allen Stewart, Pam Stewart, Phillip “Chip” Stewart, and Benjamin Brown; one brother, James Stewart (Wanda); eight grandchildren, Bridgett Chapman (Richard), Candy Marriott, Jade Stewart, Phillip Stewart Jr., Ashley Spell (Lenny), Phillip Brown, Miranda Lippert (Eric) and Matthew Brown; four (4) great grandchildren.; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the kindnesses evidenced in thought, deed and prayer.
