Charles “Doodle” William Caughman

Blythe, GA –               Charles “Doodle” William Caughman, 65, entered into his eternal rest early Friday morning, September 24, 2021 at his residence.  in Augusta. Services to celebrate his life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday afternoon, September 28, 2021 with Elder Charlie Rogers officiating. Interment will follow in the Blythe United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Because of the family’s respect and concern for public health and safety during this COVID-19 pandemic, the family requests that social distancing and other safety precautions be followed.  The wearing of face masks is strongly encouraged during any gathering.

Loving son of the late Lila Drake Gibson Caughman and the late Raymond Caughman, Charles was born in Germany and has lived in the south Augusta/Hephzibah/Blythe area since he was seven years old when his father was transferred to Ft. Gordon.  The nickname “Doodle” that his parents and siblings gave him at the age of two stuck with him throughout his life. He attended Wheeless Elementary and Murphy High School after which he started working as a mechanic with Lewis Bus Lines, then SECO and lastly with Commercial Military.  Doodle loved working on engines and was most content working, piddling and tinkering in his shop at his home. Having to quit work at the age of 50 because of health problems, he then concentrated on his family—taking care of and playing with the grands, and honing his cooking and grilling skills. He loved all holidays and went all out decorating and celebrating.  He especially loved the grands and their friends’ birthdays when he would dress up as a clown and do tricks.  Doodle had a great sense of humor and loved cutting up and picking on his family and friends.  Being “handy”, he built bird houses and model cars. Doodle enjoyed fishing and NASCAR racing with his favorite driver being Tony Stewart. He also found great pleasure in his pet pig “Porky”.  Doodle has been described as being a wonderful husband, a great dad, and a loyal friend who loved his family beyond words. His first priority was his family and their well-being.  Doodle suffered greatly as his health declined over the last fifteen years.  He found solace, comfort and strength in his salvation through the blood of Jesus and through his faith in his Savior, Redeemer and friend.  Doodle is now pain-free and is in Glory, his eternal home.

Doodle is also preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Gibson; son, Walter Watts; and granddaughter, Amaiya Jackson. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Becky Morris; children, Teri Watts (Terry Murrah), Toby Watts (Kecia), Tina Tjovaras (Troy) and Dustin Caughman; six siblings, Bobby Gibson (Janet), Billy Gibson (Linda), Barbara Harden (Ben), Linda Sims, Shirley Murchison and Louise Shippen; fifteen grandchildren, D.J. Smith, Amber Smith, Toby “Boxer” Bass, Michael Bass, Mackenzie Bass, Preston Watts, Calvin Ray Watts, Blake Watts, Hayden Watts, Mysti Atkinson, Brittany Atkinson, Calie Atkinson, Avery Tjovaras, Skylar Roberts (Jacob) and Stark Caughman; seven great grandchildren; sister-in-law and care giver, Charlotte Clark; long-time best friends, Bruce Radcliff and Allen Coleman; other extended family and many friends.  Pallbearers will be Toby Bass, Andrew Gibson, Terry Murrah, Roy Stampley, Troy Tjovaras and Ricky Williams. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Bruce Radcliff.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 12:30 – 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, September 28th, prior to the funeral.

Because of the financial burden of his long, debilitating illness, the family respectfully asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made directly to James Funeral Home, PO Box 588, Wrens GA 30833.
