Winona was a lifelong resident of Glascock County and attended Bastonville School. She worked at Stapleton Garment Company and then retired from Thermo King with 25 years of service. Winona was grateful to have loved and married two extraordinary men, the loves of her life, who blessed her with five wonderful daughters. Winona was a home body who was always busy working in her yards and flower garden, doing special projects—she was “DIY” before it was popular. Her “handy” skills were always put to use fixing and repairing her rental properties. Winona was born in an era where, when things got tough, you just kept on going and you never gave up. She has been described as being “velvet and steel” at the same time. Even though she was soft-spoken, her words and advice were realistic and pragmatic. Accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, Winona worshipped Him in the fellowship of Mineral Springs Baptist Church until her health decline. She loved to read her Bible and have her quiet, prayer time. Her greatest joy was found in her family whom she loved without reservation, with her grandchildren and great grandchildren capturing her heart.
Winona is also preceded in death by all of her siblings, Louise Woodyard, Buford Williford, Harry Williford and Dock Chalker Jr. Those left to cherish her memory include her five daughters, Janice Yarbrough (Tommy), Cathy Rabun (Wade), Linda Tapley (Lynn), Barbara Hadden and Amy Hodge Black (Cam); seven grandchildren, Sarah Brooks, Michelle Evans (Harry), Diana Reese (Lynn), Chad Hadden (Stephanie), Doug Hadden (Kelly), John Thomas Black and Nate Black; nine great grandchildren, Ethan Brooks, Janna Brooks, Rabun Evans, Noah Reese, Grant Hadden, Macy Hadden, Garrett Hadden, Halle Hadden and Huston Hadden; sister-in-law, Glennis Williford; two special life-long friends, Malene Padget and Helen Williford; a host of nieces and nephews; her church family and friends. Servings as pallbearers will be her grandsons, great grandsons and Chris Brooks.
The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 1:30 – 3:00 P.M. prior to the services Sunday afternoon, November 5, 2017.
