William "Lester" Hadden, 87, a beloved figure in the Wrens community, peacefully entered into his Heavenly home early Saturday morning, November 1, 2025, at Piedmont Augusta Hospital.
Born on April 24, 1938, Lester was raised in the Stapleton-Wrens area, where he laid down deep roots that would anchor him throughout his life and service to others. He attended Wrens High School and embarked on a varied career that included several local jobs before finding his calling at Murray Biscuit Company. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, he went on to establish his own businesses, Hadden’s IGA and Hadden’s Inc.
Lester’s commitment to his community was evident through his role as Mayor of Wrens, where he worked tirelessly to enhance the quality of life for its residents. He was a true people-person, known for his ability to connect and find common ground with anyone he met. His love for his community was matched only by his devotion to his family. He and Peggy, the love of his life, shared a meaningful marriage of 63 years, supporting and uplifting each other through both the joys and challenges of life.
Lester was also a man of faith, dedicating himself to Wrens Christian Fellowship Church, formerly known as Wrens United Methodist Church. This church family was an integral part of his life, where he provided support and care to those around him. Known for his caring and generous nature, Lester's heart was always open to helping others, embodying the very spirit of community service he championed.
Outside of his civic responsibilities, Lester enjoyed going to “the country” and indulging in his favorite pastimes. He had a particular fondness for watching college and pro football, with his television frequently tuned to Fox News or the Western Channel during quieter moments.
Lester leaves behind his loving wife, Peggy Hood Hadden; daughter, Melanie H. McDonald (Russel); son-in-law, Dennis Wheeler (Karen); brother, Thomas Hadden (Linda); nieces and nephews, including Greg Rooks, Guy McGahee (Teresa), Polly Fanchin, and Eva Ellen Ramsey (Mike); along with a host of extended family, church family, and friends who will dearly miss his warmth, strength, and unwavering spirit.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Twila H. Wheeler; his parents, Janie McTier Hadden and Josh Crawford Hadden; and his sisters, Ellen Rooks and Mary McGahee.
Visitation will be held at James Funeral Home Tuesday evening, November 4, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The Funeral Service will also be held at James Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, November 5, 2025, at 2:00 PM, with the Reverends Chad Watkins and Ron Dixon officiating. Interment will follow at Wrens Memorial Gardens. Honored to serve as pallbearers include Mark Davis, Wayne Davis, Pat Douglas, Gary Hutchins, Artie Thrift and Bruce Williams.
Lester Hadden’s legacy of love, community, and service will continue to inspire those who knew him, as they cherish the memories made with such a remarkable man.
