Blythe, GA

Walter Edward Cook, born on July 17, 1940, gently departed this world early Friday morning, June 13, 2025, at his residence in Augusta. Walter lived a life filled with compassion, dedication, and service, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know him.

After graduating from Richmond Academy, where he specialized in vocational education, Walter began an esteemed career at the Colonial Baking Company. He devoted 31 years of his life to this company, earning respect and admiration from colleagues and customers alike. His commitment to hard work did not stop there; he also took on a part-time role at Bi-Lo for 20 years, ensuring that his family was well supported. Upon retiring from Colonial, Walter did not rest on his laurels. He established a lawn service that he dedicated to assisting others, offering his services at no cost to widows and those in need for two decades, until health challenges began to take their toll.

Walter's legacy includes remarkable accomplishments during his professional and personal life, including his involvement with the Bakery, Confectionery and Tobacco Workers' International Union of America Local 503, where he served as Chief Shop Steward and held various leadership roles. His dedication was acknowledged with a letter of commendation for his loyalty and service. His commitment extended beyond his professional endeavors as he volunteered at the Georgia War Veterans Home and received multiple certificates of appreciation. Walter was also an active participant in the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), where he contributed over 15 years of service, including time as Color Sergeant, at Camp #207 in Waynesboro, and he received recognition for his 25-years of membership in Camp #1581 Augusta. Additionally, his affiliation with the American Legion Post 150 in Blythe highlighted his dedication to honoring those who served.

Walter was a strong man of faith, serving his Lord and Savior, finding a spiritual home at Faith Baptist Church for over 31 years, where he served as an usher before transitioning to the fellowship of New Horizon Church of God, where he continued his service as a greeter and usher. His passion for sharing the love of Jesus was evident in his interactions, as he made it his mission to spread the message of hope and faith to everyone he encountered. His generosity and kindness were defining traits, and he approached life with an industrious spirit and a fair-mindedness that endeared him to many.

Known for his love of gardening, Walter took joy in growing “the biggest, tastiest tomatoes.” He often expressed his zest for life with the sentiment, "I love life and to see things grow.” His greatest desire was for everyone around him to know God and experience His love. Throughout his life, he maintained focus on his faith and family.

Walter is survived by his loving children, Debbie Lewis, Donna Cook (Danny), and Melody Miller (Randy Brown); seven grandchildren, Jay Lewis, Joey Lewis, Ashley Conner (Stephan), Benjamin Cook (Jamie), Shane Cochran (Crystal), Toni McIntosh (Shaun), and Kevin Miller; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also remembered fondly by his three brothers, Eugene Cook, Wilton Davis (Wanda), and Lee Davis; and the mother of his children and caregiver, Mary Spires, alongside his extended family, church family, and a multitude of friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved spouse, Ollie Atkinson Parker Cook; his parents, Allene Cheney Cook and Bloyce Cook; and his brother, Robert Cook.
