Vera Jeanette Walden Brookins

Beaufort, SC  – Vera Jeanette Walden Brookins, 83, went to join her beloved husband, Roy Brookins, in Heaven on January 31, 2014.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM, Monday, February 3, 2014 at Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist church in Edgehill GA with Rev. Al Kurtz officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Davisboro GA, Vera was the youngest of the late Willie Gray Walden and Bessie Hamilton Walden’s three daughters. She was a registered nurse and the devoted wife of 59 years of a US Marine who served our country for 20 years. She co-owned and operated Brookins Mobile Home Park for 40 years. Even though she and her family lived in Beaufort, they maintained their “lodge” in Edgehill where they came of often as possible, spending many weekends and summers. Vera loved her Lord and Savior and was a member of Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church. She was a voracious reader and had completed reading the Bible front-to-back for the 31st time. If not reading her Bible, she could be found working her word-search puzzles, which she bought by the case, and later worked on her tablet.  Vera enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends. She was a unique personality with a straight-forward manner and genuine love and concern for others. Slow to anger, she was a dedicated, loyal friend. Vera loved her family beyond words and was happiest in their presence. Her vivacious spirit and generous heart will be greatly missed.

Vera was also preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Brookins Lamb. Her survivors include her children, Roy K. Brookins (Lucinda) and Trinda Brookins Rabon, all of Beaufort SC; five grandchildren, Angela Lamb Barrow (Shane) of Edgehill GA, David Brookins of Columbia SC, Linda Rabon Canavan (Jerry) of Beaufort SC, Katie Brookins of Macon GA, and Santee Rabon of Beaufort SC; five great grandchildren, Blake Lamb, Lyn Barrow, Malaki Hardison, Ayden Barrow and Kalliope Canavan; two sisters, Maxie Redfern of Edgehill GA, and Helen Jones of Byron GA; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.  Pallbearers will be Shane Barrow, David Brookins, Bill Jones, Donald Kent, Harold Lamb, Steve Mathis, Doyle Niedens and Derrell Usry.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 3:00-5:00PM on Sunday evening, February 2, 2014.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church Fence Fund, c/o Annette Black, 6263 Euphrates Church Rd, Edgehill GA   30810.

Legacy Of Love

A wife, a mother, a grandma too,
This is the legacy we have from you.
You taught us love and how to fight,
You gave us strength, you gave us might.
A stronger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart, you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another,
Not just as a wife, not just as a mother.
For all of us you gave your best,
Now the time has come for you to rest.
So go in peace, you've earned your sleep,
Your love in our hearts, we'll eternally keep.

Momma
By: Trinda Brookins Rabon

Fifty years ago, I was three.
Momma sewed doll clothes just for me.
So many things she did,
Big and small when I was a kid.
Rise and shine those school years,
Then the day of a thousand tears.
There were three children,
Then there were two—
The day her heart was
Forever broken in two.
No matter night or day,
Momma was only a call away.
Many places I may roam,
Momma was the rock of our home.
Now don’t be sad,
Momma is now with Linda and Dad.

Your Smile

Though your smile is gone forever
And your hand we cannot touch,
We still have many memories of the one we loved so much.
Your memory is our keepsake, with which we’ll never part.
God has you in His keeping, we have you in our hearts,
Sadly missed, but will never be forgotten.
