Roberta Ann Mattson Templeton

January 19, 1947 — June 13, 2026

Wrens, GA

Roberta Ann Mattson Templeton, a cherished educator, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed away unexpectedly on June 13, 2026, at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. Born on January 19, 1947, in Biwabik, Minnesota, Roberta’s life journey was marked by love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to her faith and family.

Roberta’s early years were spent in Embarrass, Minnesota, where she graduated from Embarrass High School before pursuing higher education at the University of Minnesota. There, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. In July 1971, a vacation to Augusta, Georgia, altered the course of her life. Securing a position in cancer research at the Medical College of Georgia, she decided to make Georgia her home. It was through a series of introductions by friends that Roberta met John Monroe Templeton, a talented pianist and music educator. Their romance blossomed swiftly, culminating in their marriage on July 29, 1972. Together, they embarked on an extraordinary journey of love and partnership.

The couple lived initially in Augusta before returning to Minnesota, where Roberta imparted her knowledge as a Home Economics teacher at the Tower-Soudan Schools. Choosing to focus on her growing family, she became a dedicated stay-at-home mother, nurturing their two sons and providing a loving sanctuary. After fifteen years in Minnesota, another move took the family to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Roberta taught Pre-K, and then to Wrens, Georgia, where she devoted thirty years to teaching 3rd grade at Blythe Elementary School. Throughout her teaching career, she pursued further education, obtaining a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Augusta University.

Roberta’s life was deeply rooted in her Christian faith, a gift she embraced as a child. Her relationship with Jesus Christ was at the center of all she did—whether in her marriage, her family life, or her teaching vocation. She was a steadfast member of Wrens Church of God and actively participated in other local congregations, including Wrens United Methodist (now Wrens Christian Fellowship) and Ebenezer Church, where her husband served as pianist. Her spiritual leadership extended to roles as worship leader and youth camp leader in Minnesota, where her polished speaking skills and heartfelt prayers left lasting impressions. Known for her warm spirit, bright smile, and genuine care for others, Roberta had a remarkable ability to connect and uplift those around her—her loving spirit and beautiful smile captured the hearts of all she encountered.

Beyond her spiritual and professional commitments, Roberta possessed a rich array of talents and interests. A musically gifted vocal soloist, often gracing weddings with her beautiful voice, she also played the piano, organ, guitar, and ukulele. She was a devoted homemaker, renowned for her culinary skills, superb seamstress abilities—including creating her own wedding dress and her grandchildren’s costumes—and a passion for crocheting and arts and crafts. Roberta created cherished memories through the “NanaPop Camp,” a special gathering for her grandchildren filled with engaging activities. She also loved athletic pursuits such as bowling and competitive putt-putt. Always community-minded, she supported her husband’s musical endeavors by assisting in video and CD production.

Roberta is survived by her loving husband, John Monroe Templeton; her two sons, John Templeton Jr. and wife Rachael, and James Templeton and wife Natasha; and her three beloved grandchildren, Oliver, Jackson, and Simone Templeton. She is also remembered fondly by her five siblings: Frances Roux (Charles) of Auburn, Lyle Mattson (Cheryl) of Britt, Minnesota, Marian Azzabi (Amr) of Eveleth, Minnesota, Terry Mattson of Ely, Minnesota, and Robert Mattson (Mary) of Ely, Minnesota; as well as nieces, nephews, other extended family, church family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jeannette Sipola Mattson and Robert Warren Mattson, and her brother, Don Mattson.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday evening, June 18, 2026, at Wrens Church of God. A funeral service will be held there Friday morning at 11:00 AM, June 19, 2026, with Rev. Jason Burton and Dr. James Shope. Interment will follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, with graveside services officiated by Rev. Ron Dixon and Rev. David Nowling. Honored to serve as pallbearers are her grandsons, Oliver Templeton and Jackson Templeton, her brothers, Rob Mattson and Terry Mattson, and her nephews Tony Wren and Chase Wren.

Her serene strength, loving spirit, and unwavering devotion have left an undeniable mark on all who knew her. She now rests peacefully in her Heavenly home, leaving behind a legacy that remains a beacon of love and grace.
