Ricky Willis Gay

Ricky Willis Gay, 62, a beloved resident of Jefferson County, unexpectedly entered into his eternity on Monday evening, August 10, 2026. Born on June 12, 1964, Ricky’s life was woven deeply into the fabric of his community and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ricky was born to Willis Abram Gay and Sanral Welch Wells, both of whom preceded him in death. Also welcoming him into eternity is his devoted wife, Rita Joanne Hiebert Gay, with whom he shared a love and partnership that brought immense joy to his life.

A lifelong resident of Jefferson County, Ricky graduated from Trinity Baptist Church School, laying down educational roots that reflected his commitment to faith, family, and community. After high school, Ricky dedicated ten years of his life working at Lee Whitaker's Dairy in Dearing, where his work ethic and reliability became quickly evident. His career path led him next to Jet Food Stores in Wrens, where he served for six years, forming bonds and friendships that endured throughout his life. Eventually, Ricky found his calling with the United States Postal Service in Hephzibah, where he delivered mail and kindness to countless community members. Over 25 years of service with USPS stands as a testament to his dedication, integrity, and commitment to duty—he had planned to retire in October 2026, a milestone sadly just out of reach.

Ricky’s life was characterized by a generous heart and an ever-ready willingness to help others. Those who knew him best describe him as having a “heart of gold”—always giving, supporting others, and never shying away from lending a hand. He was outspoken, a man of straightforward words and actions who kept his personal business private yet flourished when surrounded by friends and neighbors. Ricky enjoyed nothing more than being among others, sharing stories, and finding common ground with people from all walks of life.

In 2006, Ricky married the love of his life. Their years together were filled with the simple joys of traveling and gardening—a partnership rooted in shared passions and deep affection. Ricky loved farming and was happiest surrounded by animals, especially his beloved cows and chickens. His green thumb was well-known—he tended both vegetable and flower gardens with dedication and pride, nurturing beauty and bounty from the earth. Ricky loved hearing the Mennonite choir sing, especially after the loss of Rita—it eased his loss and soothed his spirit.

Ricky’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his surviving family members: his cousin (his chosen “sister”) Brenda James Newsome; his aunt Connie Welch Dillinger; his in-laws Rodney Hiebert (Gladys), Phyllis Giesbrecht (Lester), Grace Giesbrecht (Verle), Elizabeth Hiebert and Clark Hiebert (Deborah); cousins and other extended family. Their memories—along with the recollections held by his many friends and community members—stand as lasting tributes to his loyal, generous nature.

Ricky Willis Gay’s passing leaves a void in the lives of all who knew him. His loyalty, warmth, and unwavering willingness to be there for others will be sorely missed. He is reunited with those who went before him, but the love and impact he shared will remain with us always.

Family and friends are invited to gather in loving remembrance at the James Funeral Home from 6:00PM – 8:00PM Friday evening, August 14, 2026, for a visitation. The funeral service will also be held at James Funeral Home at 11:00AM Saturday morning, August 15, 2026, with Minister Randall Goossen officiating. Following the funeral service, he will be laid to rest next to Rita in the Pinecrest Mennonite Church Cemetery. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Harvey Welch, Phillip Knight, Ian Rushing, Rollin Giesbrecht, Milferd Holdeman and Ryan Holdeman. Honorary pallbearers will be past and present member of the Hephzibah USPS.
