Preston Scott Calhoun, 55, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home on February 17, 2024. He was a man whose life was filled with dedication to family, service to his country, and unwavering faith. Services to celebrate his life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00PM Saturday, February 24, 2024 with Rev. Ben Bush officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Wrens Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00–3:00PM at the funeral home prior to the service.
Born and raised in Augusta in the "Frog Hollow"/Lake Olmstead area, Preston graduated from Lucy Laney High School in 1989. His life took a serendipitous turn in 1988 when he met the love of his life during a chance encounter at University Hospital. It was love at first sight and they married after high school, with Preston soon after joining the Navy, proudly serving his country as he participated in the Gulf War as well as missions in Somalia.
After returning home from military service, Preston embarked on a successful career path. He worked as a manager at BiLo before transitioning to roles at Lance Foods and Frito Lay. In 2016, he made the decision to partner with his wife to grow their business, Nancy's Cleaning Service.
Known for his comedic spirit and great sense of humor, Preston always strived to bring joy into the lives of those around him. His open heart and willingness to help others endeared him to many. A man of integrity and humility, Preston lived by his word and never sought recognition for his deeds.
In 1997, Preston was baptized in his Savior’s name and received the in-filling of the Holy Spirit. He dedicated himself to the work of the Lord being a member of the Word Aflame Apostolic Church in ministry, leadership and Sunday School Director. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, alongside his devotion to family.
Preston found solace in various hobbies such as traveling to the Great Smoky Mountains, adding to his huge collection of gift cards, grilling and smoking meat to be enjoyed by family and friends, hosting bonfires and sitting around his fire pit. He enjoyed and appreciated all his blessings. Preston based his life around his love for Jesus, his family and his church family. His love for fellowship and developing deeper relationships was apparent in all he did.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Nona Pardue Calhoun and John Ray Calhoun; and sister, Trudie Brantley. Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife, Nancy Cooper Calhoun; beloved children, Natalie Smith (Brock) and Scotty Calhoun (Victoria); cherished grandchildren, Kailyn Walden, Emma Walden, and Emberlynn Calhoun; siblings, Troy Poteat (Teresa), Tim Calhoun (Jane), Penny Barlow (Tony), Beverly Calhoun, Grace Karp, Hazel Brotherton; along with nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and numerous friends. Honored to served as pallbearers are Tony Barlow, Dallas Bush, Allen Chavous, Tanner Land, Josh Simmons and Russell Snyder. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Bales, Charlie Brown, Herbie Cooper, Walter Cooper, Joey McFadden and Bill Pica.
Preston will be deeply missed but remembered for his love for God, family, and country, as well as his faithfulness, kindness, and humor. May he rest in peace knowing that he touched countless lives with his gentle soul and generous spirit.
