Norman Dixon Pittman
Avera, GA – Norman Dixon Pittman, 72, loving husband to Jewel Coleman Pittman, entered into his eternal rest Friday afternoon, July 19, 2019, at Thomson Health & Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 A.M. Monday morning, July 22, 2019, with Rev. John Beck officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Avera.
One of four children born to the late Deryl Dixon Pittman and the late Johnnie Franklin Pittman, Norman was a lifelong resident of Avera, with the exception of a short while when he worked and lived in Augusta. After graduating from Wrens High School, he worked for Borden’s Milk Company, after which he worked for Uniroyal. Then, starting out as a Foreman, he retired as Superintendent from Deerfield Specialty Paper. Norman did enjoy fishing but his favorite hobby and pastime was “tinkering” or “mechanicking” on small motors and engines. He loved being outdoors and could be found cutting the grass and working in his vegetable garden which included corn, peas, okra, squash and tomatoes. Norman could not just sit around—he had to be busy doing something. Known as a practical joker, he had a great sense of humor and loved to joke around. He liked to laugh and make others laugh. Norman loved Jesus, his Lord and Savior, serving him as a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he served on the Finance Committee and was enrolled in the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class. He read and studied God’s Word daily, striving to be the Christian man emulated by Christ Jesus. Because of the freedom he experienced through his salvation, he lived life to its fullest. Having a close-knit family, he loved his family unconditionally. A devoted husband and loyal friend, Norman’s generous, loving spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Norman was also preceded in death by his sister, Javonne P. Thigpen. Other survivors include his three siblings, Vannie P. Black (Jimmy, Dewain Pittman (Donna), and Bernard Pittman (Johanna); children, Robert H. Carr (Christy), Gerald K. Carr, Daniel L. Carr and Tammy E. Carr; four grandchildren, Danny Rogers III, Kristen Boone, Danielle Carr, and Brooke Carr; three great grandchildren; a niece and nephew, and many, many friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Black, Wade Brooks, Louie Chalker, Walker Lewis, Warren Mathis, and Larry McGraw. Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class and the Deacons.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request that memorial contributions be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Bobbie Williams, P.O. Box 55, Avera GA 30803.
The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sunday evening, July 21, 2019.
