Michael Calvin James, 64, known affectionately as “Mike”, passed away on February 9, 2024, at Doctors Hospital. Born on October 29, 1959 to the late Ruth Lamb James Manning and the late Calvin Raley James, he lived on Jamestown Road in Jefferson County until he was four years old when Mike's mother moved to the South Augusta/Hephzibah area.

Mike's talent and passion led him to work customizing vans, with one of his proudest achievements being the customization of James Brown's touring van. After this venture, he joined International Paper as an industrial mechanic. Determined to enhance his skills, he attended several schools sponsored by International Paper to earn his welding certification. With a strong work ethic and dedication, Mike worked there for many years until he decided to start his own business called Mike James Welding Service, in which he was a certified welding contractor for Boral Brick.

In October 2004, tragedy struck when Mike was involved in a dirt bike accident that left him disabled. Despite facing new challenges, he remained resilient. In the face of adversity and in the midst of challenges posed by his disability, he maintained his positive attitude and was an inspiration to those around him. A true warrior, he fought bravely until the end.

Mike was renowned for his captivating storytelling abilities and possessed a great sense of humor and wit. He had a special talent for giving catchy nicknames to those close to him whom he held dear. A lively and fun-loving individual, Mike's generosity knew no bounds. He easily won the hearts of everyone around him with his straight-forward yet kind-hearted nature.

Outside of work, Mike delighted in pursuing various hobbies and interests. He had a deep appreciation for dream catchers and arrowheads, amassing an impressive collection over the years. As a true woodsman, hunting was not just a pastime but a passion close to his heart. His artistic abilities knew no bounds as he took great pleasure in drawing. Additionally, Mike was musically inclined and found solace in playing the drums, a talent he shared with his son.

Mike is survived by his loving children, Matthew M. James (Jessica) and Jennifer Rowe (Stephen). He will forever be remembered and cherished by his grandchildren, Emelie James, Addison James, Preston Pendrey, Stephen Pendrey, Peyton Pendrey, and Braylon Pendrey. Mike also leaves behind his siblings, Joyce Lindemuth, Tony James (Shirley), Vincent James (Kathy), Alan James, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family members, and countless friends who were touched by his remarkable life.  He is also preceded in death by his beloved brother, Ronnie James.

The memory of Mike will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit of resilience and unwavering positivity will continue to inspire all those who carry forward his legacy.
