Martha Ann Edwards Gay
Wrens, GA – Martha Ann Edwards Gay, 84, loving wife of 66 years to Oliver Gay Jr., entered into her eternal rest Monday night, January 27, 2020 at Doctors Hospital. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday afternoon, January 30, 2020 at Wrens Baptist Church with Reverends Mason Davis and Carson Fellows officiating. Interment will follow in the Wrens Memorial Gardens.
The only daughter born to the late Etta Mae Huffmaster Edwards and the late Hugh Monroe Edwards, Martha was born and raised in Newnan. In her early teens, her family moved to Louisville, where she graduated high school. She met the love of her life, a boy from Wrens, at a dance in Louisville, blurring those old competitive lines between the two towns. After her children were in school, Martha obtained her Cosmetology degree from Augusta Tech and opened her own salon. She then went back to school, earning her credentials to be an instructor at the Augusta Tech Cosmetology School, teaching there for 10 years. Her favorite job was being a homemaker—her goal was to make their home a comfortable safe haven. She and Oliver loved to travel in their RV, visiting and touring all over the United States and Canada. Martha loved her Lord and Savior, actively serving Him until her health decline at Wrens Baptist Church where she taught the Lucy Howard Sunday School Class, was a member of the Willis Clark Sunday School Class, was a member of the choir, and was chairman of the Hostess Committee. An organized, no-nonsense person, Martha was very forthright in her approach with people—you always knew exactly where you stood with her. She had a desire for everything to be “right” and did her best to make it happen. Loving her family unconditionally, they brought her much joy and pleasure. Her faith and trust in the Lord brought her through life’s hardest trials; and now, having a new, perfect body, she is in Glory with God forever more.
Martha was also preceded in death by her son, Randy Gay; son-in-law, Leon Peebles; and two brothers and their wives, Hugh Edwards (Margaret) and Bill Edwards (Barbara). Other survivors include her daughter, Marsha Peebles; daughter-in-law, Sharon Gay Broome (Alan); three grandchildren, Marc Peebles (Holly), Lee Peebles (Marissa) and Randy Gay Jr. (Amy); six great grandchildren, Paetyn Peebles, Marlee Grace Peebles, Lux Gay, Blakely Gay, Mitch Black and Lorie Black; nieces, nephews, church family and friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Adams, Doug Edwards, Jim Gay, Harold Howard, Charles Milburn and George Samples.
The family will receive friends at Wrens Baptist Church from 12:00–2:00PM Thursday, January 30th prior to the services.
