Joan Parrish Rhodes, 88, lovingly known as “Mama Jo” to family and friends, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully took her Savior's hand and entered into her Heavenly home early Monday morning, October 14, 2024, at her daughter's residence in Wrens. Born on April 23, 1936, Joan was a lifelong resident of Wrens, where she made lasting memories and friendships throughout her vibrant life.
Joan was a 1954 graduate of Wrens High School, where she was an active member of the BETA Club. Her journey began in the quaint surroundings of the old Wrens Theater, where she not only worked selling tickets but also met the love of her life. In February of 1955, following a whirlwind romance, they embarked on a beautiful journey together, starting their family soon after.
In her early years as a homemaker, Joan dedicated herself to her family, nurturing them with love and warmth. In the early 1960s, she began her career at Pete Harris Insurance Agency, demonstrating both determination and independence. Joan later became a well-known Avon representative for over 25 years. Her career continued as she sold American General Life Insurance, and she ultimately served as a dedicated bank teller for Queensborough Bank, working in the branches of Louisville and Wrens before her well-deserved retirement after more than 15 years.
Joan's vibrant personality shone through in her love for people and her passion for laughter. She was known for her witty spirit and cherished the special moments spent with her family, particularly her granddaughters, as they sang and danced together. A devoted follower of her faith, Joan accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at a young age. She served at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and led the choir until January 2011 when she transferred her membership to Wrens Baptist Church. There, she became a treasured member of the Lucy Howard Sunday School class and enjoyed singing with the church choir until health challenges arose.
Joan's love for music, especially old-time gospel, was evident as she participated in gospel sings throughout the state as part of the Mt. Horeb trio. She found immense joy in singing praises to her Lord and in the fellowship of her fellow believers, serving as a source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Dedicated to her family, Joan loved to cook, especially preparing meals from the fresh vegetables she grew in her garden. She delighted in both the planting and the harvesting, sharing her bounty with family, friends, and those in need. An avid fan of NASCAR and the Georgia Bulldogs, she embraced a life filled with activities that brought her joy and fostered connections with others.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Billy Harvey Rhodes; son, James "Rhodie" Rhodes; granddaughter, Mindy Milburn; parents, Melvis Russell Parrish and James Cleon Parrish; and brother, Bobby Parrish. She leaves behind her loving and devoted daughters, Vicky R. Gingery (Dale) and Julie R. Johnson (Phillip); three granddaughters, Megan Johnson, Mallory McBride (Josh), and Karli Johnson; her great grandson, Jaxon McBride; other extended family, church family and friends. Those honored to serve as pallbearers include Randy Gingery, George Samples, Gary Smith, Ray Smith, Ray Treadway and Steve Williford.
The family will greet friends at James Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00PM Thursday evening, October 17, 2024. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00PM Friday afternoon, October 18, 2024, at Wrens Baptist Church with the Reverends James Barnes and Mason Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Horeb Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family offers special thanks to the staff of Regency Hospice and Keysville Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center for their loving, compassionate and professional care.
Joan's legacy of love, faith, and joy will forever remain in the hearts of all those she touched. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
