James Albert Willoughby

August 7, 1942 — May 24, 2025

Stapleton, GA

James Albert Willoughby, 82, a lifelong resident of Stapleton, peacefully transitioned into his eternity on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Piedmont Hospital in Augusta. Born on August 7, 1942, James was widely known and deeply respected within his community, charming all with his engaging personality and warm sense of humor.

After leaving school in the 10th grade to help on the family farm, James went on to work at various local establishments before finding his calling at Stapleton Milling Company, which he would eventually own and operate. Many in the area still fondly referred to him as the "Mill Man." Following the closing of the company, he worked at Thermo King before obtaining his Commercial Driver's License and driving short-haul for various companies, including Coca-Cola, Wayne Smith, and Howard Sheppard.

Described as a "little bit outlaw" and a "dynamite wild child," James had a magnetic presence that drew people to him. With a natural ability to connect with others, he was a true people-person who relished chatting with everyone he met. His devotion to family was evident, and he nurtured many friendships throughout his life. James had a great sense of humor and was often seen as a jokester among his friends.

In his leisure time, James enjoyed the simplicity of country life, spending his days outdoors hunting and fishing. A passionate NASCAR fan, his favorite driver was Bill Elliott, and in his younger years, he even took part in go-cart racing. He also found joy in grilling for family and friends and cherished a simple, uncluttered lifestyle that allowed him to appreciate the little things.

James is survived by his wife, Shirley Stapleton Willoughby; their children, Jimmy Willoughby and Anita Willoughby; his sister, Betty Purvis (Randy); brothers, Donnie Willoughby and Ronnie Willoughby; as well as nephew Chris Sheppard, other extended family members, and many friends who will dearly miss him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clouise Huff Willoughby and Albert Eugene Willoughby.
