James "Fitz" Nicholas Fitzgerald

March 20, 1959 — August 21, 2025

Keysville, GA

James Nicholas Fitzgerald, 66, affectionately known as "Fitz”, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, at The Place at Martinez. Born on March 20, 1959, while his father was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, Fitz spent his formative years moving across the globe, attending schools in Germany, Colorado, and South Carolina, before returning to Texas where he graduated from Copperas Cove High School.

Fitz joined the Navy and his dedication to service began the day after his high school graduation when he left for boot camp. He served with distinction as a Navy Seabees, retiring as a Steel Worker Chief (SCW) after 24 years of dedicated service while based in Gulfport, Mississippi. Following his retirement from the Navy, Fitz continued his commitment to public service by working for the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Gordon, ultimately retiring a second time after 23 years. His exceptional work ethic and significant expertise in the field, particularly his mastery of the EM385 code, earned him great respect from his colleagues.

In 1983, while stationed in Virginia Beach, Fitz met the love of his life, whom he cherished deeply and took with him wherever duty called. Their journey together led them through California, Washington, Iowa, and Mississippi, ultimately settling in Georgia.

Fitz was a man of many interests and passions. He loved motorcycles and could often be found tinkering with them, as well as taking care of his beloved 1969 El Camino. His love for the outdoors was evident through his enjoyment of camping, boating, and other outdoor pursuits. Known for his vibrant personality, Fitz had a talent for making friends wherever he went, and his humor brought joy to many. He was devoted to his family, a sentiment that cannot be overstated.

Fitz was a great animal love and is survived by his faithful friend and canine companion, Jack, a Walker Coon Hound, who misses him terribly. Because of his love for animals, especially dogs, the family requests no flowers be sent but instead he be honored by sending memorial contributions to Veterans K9 Solutions Inc., 629 Fieldstone Way, Evans GA 30809.

He is survived by his loving partner and companion of 42 years, Cheryl A. Flynn; children Chuck Loy (Jan & Michelle) and John Flynn (Brandi), and his grandchildren Rebecca Uransky (Andrew), Robert Loy (Katelyne), Marcy Roberts, Brandon Roberts, Clarise Bragg, Jay Flynn, and Ramsey Flynn. Fitz also cherished his great-grandchildren Aiden Uransky, Logan Uransky, Maddi Uransky, and Emma Hall. He is remembered fondly by his siblings, Eva Marie Lucas, William F. Fitzgerald Jr., Charles Fitzgerald (Carroll), and Dorothy Reitler (Gary), alongside his nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends who will miss him dearly.

Fitz was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Ann Dale Fitzgerald and William Frank Fitzgerald.

To celebrate Fitz's life and honor his legacy, a memorial service with full military honors will be held on September 12, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the VFW Post 12190 located at 4290 Triangle Industrial Drive, Evans, GA 30809. (Casual dress).
