James “Jimmy” Roberson Cunningham

Wrens, GA  –              James “Jimmy” Roberson Cunningham, 71, loving husband of 49 years to Donna Howard Cunningham, entered into his eternal rest Saturday afternoon, June 1, 2019, at Augusta University Medical Center. Services to celebrate his life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday afternoon, June 26, 2019 with Rev. Shon Cunningham officiating. A private interment will follow in the Russell Family Mausoleum in Keysville.

One of two sons born to the late Betty Lou Roberson Cunningham and the late James Thomas Cunningham, Jimmy grew up in Odum where he graduated from Odum High School. He then attended Brewton Parker before he was drafted into the Army.  Jimmy honorably served our country during Viet Nam, an experience only his brothers in arms can fully understand. Upon his return home, he visited his uncle in Wrens where he met and married the love of his life. Moving to Brunswick, he worked at Brunswick Pulpwood for a short while before going to work at Friedman’s Jewelers in Griffin. Jimmy then moved his family to Simpsonville SC where he was the manager for Pic ‘N Pay Shoes.  Having an opportunity to serve as a mail carrier in Augusta, the family moved to Martinez. In 1991, when Jimmy’s health declined and he became disabled, the family moved to Wrens to be closer to family and friends.

Jimmy loved golf!  Before becoming disabled, he could be found on the golf course. Anytime golf was on TV, he was there watching intently and enthusiastically. He also was a voracious reader and was always up on current events and news.  He did enjoy travelling and vacationing in the Great Smoky Mountains. When physically able, Jimmy enjoyed working in his flowers and watching the birds at his many bird baths and feeders.  This provided him much comfort and peace.

His jobs in sales and as a mail carrier suited his gregarious and congenial nature. Jimmy would talk with anyone and was sincerely interested in learning about them and the “goings on” in their lives. People were drawn to his smile and great sense of humor.  He was not a complainer and kept a positive outlook during his many maladies. Most of all, Jimmy loved his family unconditionally and was most content in their presence.

Other survivors include his three children, Rachel Cunningham, Erik Cunningham (Ashley) and Clay Cunningham; brother, Joe Cunningham (Jean); six grandchildren, Paul Davis, Savannah Davis, Jacob Davis, Paige Perry (Austin), Erik Cunningham II, and Morgan Cunningham; one great grandson, Abel Perry; his brother-in-law, Lex Howard (Molly); “adopted” family and friends.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home after the services Wednesday afternoon, June 26, 2019.
