Hattie Lou Prescott Kitchens, 84, born on July 10, 1941, in the Matthews, peacefully took Jesus’ hand early Saturday morning, September 20, 2025, at her residence to go to her eternal Heavenly home. She was a beloved wife, devoted mother, loving grandmother, and a cherished sister, maintaining strong bonds with her family throughout her life.
Growing up in the Matthews-Keysville-Wrens area, she graduated from Wrens High School in 1960, after which she began her career working at Stapleton Garment Company, followed by the Dairy Queen in Wrens and Samson Garment Company in Waynesboro. It was at the Dairy Queen where Hattie met the love of her life with their romance blossoming over two years and culminating in their marriage on December 20, 1968. Hattie and Sam made their home in Dearing before eventually settling into their forever home in Warren County in 1976.
Hattie Lou dedicated herself to being a full-time stay-at-home mom and homemaker, a role she cherished above all others. She often described this as her most important and fulfilling job, emphasizing her love for her family, which remained her top priority throughout her lifetime. Hattie Lou was a woman with an humble, gentle yet strong-willed spirit. Her laughter was contagious, and she enjoyed sharing her favorite "joke of the day" clipped from the newspaper. Her beautiful smile brought joy to countless family gatherings, reflecting her deep appreciation for the bonds that held her large family together.
Having accepted Jesus as a young girl, Hattie Lou was a faithful member of Mt. Moriah UMC Church and later attended Mt. Beulah Baptist Church after moving to Warren County. She was known for her unwavering love and support of her family and her church community, showcasing the values she held dear. Her faith sustained her throughout her life allowing her to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of life around her.
In addition to her close-knit family ties, Hattie Lou pursued various hobbies and interests. A collector at heart, she especially adored lighthouses and bells. Her engaging personality shone through her love for puzzles—both jigsaw and word puzzles—as well as her passionate reading. In her younger days, she enjoyed fishing with her husband and was well-known for her exceptional baking skills, delighting her family with her culinary creations.
Hattie Lou leaves behind her beloved husband, Sam D. Kitchens Jr.; devoted children, Pam K. Jones (Aubrey) and Carla K. Daughtry (Brad); and her precious granddaughter, Amelia Daughtry. She is also survived by six cherished siblings: June Rooks, Ann P. Brown, Edward Prescott (Carole), Kenneth Prescott (Barbara), Iris Bazemore (Gary), and Gordon Prescott (Edie); along with a host of nieces, nephews, other extended family, her church family, and many friends who were honored to know her.
Hattie Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Irene Tinley Prescott and King Edward Prescott, as well as her two brothers, George Prescott and David Prescott.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday evening, September 23, 2025 at James Funeral Home. Funeral services officiated by Rev. David Miller will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday afternoon, September 24, 2025 in the James Funeral Home Chapel with the interment following in the Mt. Beaulah Baptist Church Cemetery. Honored to serve as pallbearers include Mitchell Garbutt, Bobby Mauck, Gregory Milburn, Kip Prescott, Wayne Prescott and Dean Tyner.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to honor Hattie and further the kingdom of God be made to Mt. Beulah Baptist Church, 356 Mt. Beulah Rd, Stapleton GA 30823.
Hattie Lou Prescott Kitchens will be remembered lovingly by all who knew her, forever cherished in their hearts.
