Dorothy "June" Owensby Wingerter

January 28, 1932 — January 8, 2024

Harrison, GA

Dorothy "June" Owenby Wingerter, 91, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2024, at Scott Health and Rehabilitation in Adrian.  A visitation for family and friends will be held at James Funeral Home from 12:30 – 1:30 PM Thursday, January 11, 2024, after which graveside services will be held in the Harrison Baptist Church Cemetery at 2:30 PM with her son, Jerome Scruggs officiating.

A remarkable woman whose warm heart and caring nature touched the lives of many, June was born on January 28, 1932, in Harrison, Washington County, Georgia.  June spent her formative years in Harrison and attended Washington County School. After graduating, she married, living in North Carolina and Illinois before returning to live in her hometown of Harrison.  Because of her health decline, she moved to Blythe in 2021, living with her son, Fred, until January 2023, when she moved into the Scott Health and Rehabilitation in Adrian.

As a dedicated homemaker, June found immense joy in taking care of her family and creating a loving home for them. Her selflessness knew no bounds as she tirelessly met their needs and ensured that they felt nurtured and safe. Her heart overflowed with compassion, generosity, love, and care, not only for her immediate family but also for anyone who needed assistance.

June possessed an adventurous spirit that led her to embrace life's experiences with gusto. She was up-beat and feisty, always facing challenges head-on with determination. But above all else, June had an infectious happiness that brought warmth to the hearts of those around her. Her positive outlook on life radiated through her interactions with others.

When she wasn't tending to her loved ones or embarking on new adventures, June indulged in various hobbies that brought her immense joy. Crocheting, knitting, sewing, quilting—she had a talent for creating beautiful handmade treasures infused with love. Additionally, she delighted in the culinary arts and was known for crafting delicious meals that brought families together around the table.  June also had a love for travel and seeing the country, often opting for the scenic backroads rather than the mundane interstates. Her travels allowed her to witness the breathtaking beauty of nature and forge cherished memories along the way.

A woman who cherished her family above all else, she had an unwavering devotion to her children, Frederick J. Scruggs (Cheryl), Jerome Scruggs (Pam), Theresa McPherson, and Frank Wingerter. Her loving spirit extended to her grandchildren, Matthew Scruggs (Ashley), Daniel Scruggs, Rebecca Scruggs, Kelly Hooks, Rachel McPherson, Andrew McPherson, Sarah McPherson, and Ryan Wingerter. Additionally, June was blessed with seven great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her life.

In addition to her immediate family, the memories shared with her late mother, Mattie Cockran Owensby, late father, Lonzo Owensby, and late sister, Evelyn Owensby, held a special place in June's heart.

The family wishes to extend their heart-felt thanks to the staff of Scott Health and Rehabilitation for their compassionate, loving and professional care.

June leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion. She touched the lives of countless individuals through her acts of compassion and warm-heartedness. We mourn the loss of this exceptional woman, but we also celebrate a life well-lived. June's spirit will forever live on in our cherished memories.
