Calton Alden Newman
Blythe, GA – Calton Alden "C.A." Newman, 93, loving husband of 71 years to Malissie Ann Stephens Newman, peacefully entered into his eternal home early Wednesday morning, August 28, 2019, at Azalea Health and Rehabilitation Center in Augusta. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, August 30, 2019 in the Blythe Baptist Church with the Reverends Josh Caine, Bucky Halford and Buddy Frierson officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
The youngest of six children, Calton is a lifelong resident of the Keysville-Blythe area and attended Keysville School. A patriot, he quit school and joined the Army serving as a paratrooper during World War II and landing on the beaches of Normandy. He married the love of his life upon his return home. He took advantage of the GI Bill to further his education and learn a trade, working with ceramic tile in the construction business for 70 years until his health decline. Calton worked hard to provide for his family, teaching them his work ethic and demonstrating honesty and integrity in his business ethics. He loved his Lord and Savior and served Him faithfully for 60+ years at Blythe Baptist Church. His favorite pastime was playing baseball on a sandlot team. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. Calton was described as having a big heart—a heart of gold—and was known for his generous nature and as being a loyal, dedicated friend. A family man, he loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with an absolute, unconditional love. He took his role as husband, father and grandfather very seriously, trying to protect his family and keep them safe. He did not store his treasure in material possessions, but in his family and relationships which he knew would create more of a far-reaching and lasting legacy. This man of God cherished his family, his church, his community and his country.
Calton was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Elizabeth Padgett Gunn Newman and Oliver Thomas “O.T.” Newman; and all five siblings, Olive Greiner, Louie Gunn, Susie Arrington, Theron Gunn and Albert Newman. Other survivors include his four children, Larry Newman (Ida), Jerry Newman (Brenda), Danny Newman (Vicki) and Pam Callaway (Barry); eight grandchildren, Cal Newman (Christie), Laurie Newman, Lee Newman Jr., Missy Lanier (Will), Craig Newman, Chelsea Newman, Jennifer New and Thomas New; seventeen great grandchildren, Cameron Rampulla, Lanie Newman, Grace Newman, Cadence Ferron, Caleb Newman, Jacob Newman, Lydia Newman, Alexis Lanier, Austin Lanier, Kyndal Lanier, Brooks Lanier, Marlee Newman, Maci New, Asher Drew, Luke Drew, Haley New, and McKayla New; nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Roy Allen, Wayne Allen, Brett Chancey, Clifford Chancey Jr., Jerry James and Scott Martin.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to Jerry James and Kathy Hubbard for all their assistance and support over the years, and to the staff of Azalea Health and Rehabilitation Center for their professional, compassionate, and loving care.
The family will receive friends at Blythe Baptist Church from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. Friday afternoon, August 30, 2019 prior to the services.
