Jeannie McCarthy Grimes

Matthews, GA  –         Jeannie Carmen McCarthy Grimes, 66, entered into her eternal rest early Thursday morning, February 14, 2019 at Augusta University.  Services to celebrate her life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 6:00 P.M on Monday, February 18, 2019 with Edward C. James officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the services.

While her father was serving in the military, Jeannie was born in Giessen Germany, and lived in various places until he was transferred to Ft. Gordon in 1965.  As a young girl, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church. After graduating from Wrens High School, she worked for Carole Fabrics and then started an upholstery business in Clearwater SC. Jeannie moved back to the Wrens area in 1989 to take care of her mother who had suffered a major stroke. She stayed after the death of her mother to take care of her step-dad.  Keeping up their family tradition of having weekly Sunday dinners together, she enjoyed preparing her favorite dishes for those she cherished. She enjoyed collecting old bottles, knives, green frogs and mushrooms.  An animal lover, Jeannie had soft spot for dogs and cats. She was honest to a fault and loyal—she would do anything for her family and friends.  Jeannie loved to go camping with her family and was very active until the year 2000 when, while camping, was bitten by a tick and developed Lyme disease rendering her disabled and creating a bevy of physical problems.  Not being able to drive, get out by herself and being dependent upon others went against her strong-willed, self-reliant, independent nature.  She did what she could for herself but always hated the feeling of being a burden to others.  Her family, especially her great nephew, Nick, brought her great joy. Death leaves a void that no one can fill; but love leaves us memories that no one can steal. Rest in peace, Jeannie.

Jeannie is preceded in death by her father, Charles Lee McCarthy; mother, Margarete Dietz McCarthy James; brother, Frank McCarthy; and her step-father, Calvin James.  Those left behind to cherish her memory include her daughter, Patsy Tumminello; her sister, Patty Combs (Greg); niece, Jamie Humphrey (Dave); great nephew, Nick Cook; special friends, Reba Daniels, Linda M. Guffey, Margie James and Donna James; and a host of friends.
