Gregory Thomas Lewis, Sr.

Wrens, GA  –              Gregory “Greg” Thomas Lewis Sr., 66, loving husband of 44 years to Kathleen Perdue Lewis, entered into his eternal rest Thursday evening, December 13, 2018 at Jefferson Hospital in Louisville. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday afternoon, December 18, 2018 in the James Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend John A. Jenkins officiating.  Interment will follow in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

A lifelong native of Wrens, Greg was one of five children born to the late Ann Ruth Kitchens Lewis and the late Charles Herbert Lewis Sr.  After graduating from Wrens High School in 1970, he attended Middle Georgia College.  A member of Wrens Baptist Church, he had a relationship with his Savior, Jesus Christ. Meeting the love of his life at a school dance, it was love at first sight, with them marrying just three months later on her eighteenth birthday. A hard worker with an impeccable work ethic, Greg retired from J.M. Huber with 23 years of service and was had been working at Lewis Steel Works for the last fifteen years.  Greg was very intelligent and mechanically inclined; he could be counted on to figure out solutions to problems. In his spare time, he did enjoy fishing and hunting.  He especially loved to watch deer in his back yard and would feed them to make sure they came back year after year.  Greg had a green thumb and could be found working in his yard—he found this to be very cathartic and therapeutic. He always listened to music which made his tasks more enjoyable. When inside, he liked watching TV—FOX News, the Hallmark Channel, the Sports Channel and old movies. Greg was known for his outgoing, gregarious personality and great sense of humor.  He would often enthrall people with his stories, which were many.   A loyal friend, he was always willing to help others. Greg was the type of guy who saw a need and just did it without having to be asked for help.  He has been described as an honest, down-to-earth man; a common man who was proud to be a Southerner; and a man with a big heart for others.  Above all else, he had an absolute love for his family—his grandchildren stole his heart and gave him great joy. Greg loved life—he lived it large and tried to make it beautiful for everyone he knew. His death leaves a void that no one can fill; but his love leaves memories that no one can steal.

Greg is also preceded in death by a sister, Sherra Hedrick. Other survivors include his children, Karla Lewis Goodwin (Chris) and Gregory “Thomas” Lewis Jr. (Krista); siblings, Charles “Buster” Lewis Jr. (Nell), Billy Lewis, Martha Ann Rountree and Charlotte L. Gilmore (Rocky); eight grandchildren, Kaitlyn Holdeman (Christopher), Taiyler Goodwin, Bryson Goodwin, Braydon Cook, Brooklynn Lewis, Jordan Cook, Jackson Lewis and Aubrey Lewis; nieces, nephews and many friends. Pallbearers will be Zack Lewis, Buster Lewis, Billy Lewis, Brian Lewis, Ben Lewis, Adam Lewis, Rocky Gilmore, Braydon Cook, Jordan Cook and Bryson Goodwin. Serving as honorary pallbearers will Rex Hunley.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Monday evening, December 17, 2018.
