Joe Luther Rabun

Louisville, GA  –        Joe Luther Rabun, 72, loving husband of 52 years to Emily Dye Rabun, entered into his eternal rest Thursday night, November 10, 2016 at Jefferson Hospital. Graveside services with military honors will be held in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery at 2:00 P.M. Monday afternoon, November 14, 2016 with Ray Nash and Reverend John Beck officiating.

A native of Savannah, Joe was one of eight children born to the late Delia Neal Rabun and the late Samuel Bose Rabun. When a young boy, his family moved to Wrens where he graduated from high school.  A proud patriot, Joe joined the Marines and fought in the Vietnam War. He met the love of his life while riding the school bus to school—his first, last and only girlfriend—marrying her after she graduated from high school  while still in the Marine Corps.  He joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church soon after the wedding in 1964.  Discovering that he did better as his own boss, Joe was a true entrepreneur—he had his hand in many ventures.  He was a skilled ironworker and steel fabricator, diesel mechanic, salesman, trucking business…just to name a few of his many talents and skills. His passion was his work, but he also enjoyed fishing and traveling.  He and his love visited all of the states with the exceptions of Alaska, Hawaii and Maine, as well as many countries in Central America, the Mediterranean, Belize, and a host of other places—he enjoyed experiencing God’s creation. Everywhere he went, people gravitated to Joe—he was a good listener and advisor.  “A big man with a big heart”; “a truly unique man with many talents”—whatever words are used to describe him, everyone can agree that there was not another like Joe Rabun in this world.

Joe is also preceded in death by five siblings, Floyd Rabun, Bill Rabun, Jack Rabun, Doris Nash and Faye Rabun.  Other survivors include his sons, Kenneth Andrew Rabun (Norma) and Ronnie L. Rabun (Stephanie Head); two siblings, Martha Foss and Michael Rabun (Nancy); five grandchildren, William Andrew Rabun, Kenneth James Rabun, Sara Grace Rabun, Rhett Tyler Rabun and Mallory Head; two “adopted” children, Maurico “Moyo” Mena and Alvaro Mena; many nieces, nephews and friends.  Serving as pallbearers will be Bill Dye, Vic Dye, Tim Gantt, Charles Legette, Alvaro Mena, Moyo Mena, Pete O’Donald and Jamie Rabun.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Sunday evening, November 13, 2016.

I'm Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free;
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call;
I tunred my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship share, a laugh, a kiss--
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow:
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much;
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.
Perhaps my time seems all too brief;
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me:
God wanted me now--He set me free.
