Daniel Louis McDermott

Stapleton, GA  –         After a long hard-fought battle with lung cancer, Daniel Louis McDermott, 70, entered into eternal rest Saturday evening, November  28, 2015 at his residence.

One of three sons born to the late Audrey Babbitt McDermott and the late Daniel Leonard McDermott, Daniel grew up in New Jersey.  A patriot, he joined the U.S. Army at a young age and served in the Vietnam War. After Vietnam, he stayed in the Army for another six years before joining the U.S. Air Force, obtaining the rank of Technical Staff Sergeant and retiring with over 25 years of service to his beloved country. His entire career and a favorite pastime involved vehicles—from driving tanks in the military to the restoration of classic cars with him doing the body work, painting and upholstering.  Daniel also loved the ocean and was a certified deep sea diving instructor.  Needing to always be busy, he formed several businesses in the course of his life.  One of his greatest passions included gardening.  He built a one-acre Japanese garden at his home containing the earth, water and fire elements, which provided him great peace and comfort.  He was also a prolific writer and lover of books.  Being very intelligent and well-versed in many areas, he kept abreast of the political climate which often went too far left for his conservative views, often writing many letters to the editor expressing his concerns for the country he loved and fought for.  His often straight-forward, direct, and gruff manner hid a loving, generous spirit. This fiercely loyal man of intellect and integrity has left a great void no one can fill.

Daniel is also preceded in death by his brother, Richard McDermott.  Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Richard Rodriquez of Buford SC; his grandchildren, Alexis Adams, Leon “Butch” Adams and Drake Adams; a brother, Ronald McDermott of Koleen, Indiana; his adopted family, Kevin, Tammy and Amanda Barbour; and many friends.

Daniel requested that memorial contributions be made to Trinity Hospice, 2803 Wrightsboro Rd, Ste 38, Augusta GA 30909.
